Russell's approach

His work spans some of the world's most compelling natural environments, from the rugged moorland of Dartmoor and the countryside of Devon to the mountains and lakes of the Lake District, the wild landscapes of Scotland and the dramatic terrain of Iceland. Combining fine art colour photography with a considered approach to black and white landscape photography, Russell creates images that explore not only how a place looks, but how it feels to experience it.

Russell's photographic journey began at the age of fifteen with a traditional Zenith film camera. Over the years, his interest in the technical and creative possibilities of photography developed through medium-format systems, including a Mamiya 645AF III paired with a Phase One P21+ digital back.

Today, Russell shoots exclusively with the Hasselblad X2D 100C medium-format camera. Chosen for its exceptional resolution, colour reproduction and build quality, the system allows him to capture the fine detail, subtle tonal variations and atmospheric nuances that are central to his work. This technical precision supports his ambition to create fine art landscape photographs suitable for large-scale, gallery-quality prints.

For Russell, however, the equipment is only one part of the process. The photograph begins with being present in a place, understanding its character and recognising when the conditions come together to create something worth capturing.

Patience is central to Russell's approach to landscape photography. He will often spend hours in the field, observing the changing conditions and waiting for the right alignment of light, mist, cloud and shadow. The golden hours around sunrise and sunset can transform even a familiar landscape, revealing textures, shapes and details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This appreciation for natural light informs his photography across a wide range of environments, from the open moorland and granite tors of Dartmoor to the mountains of the Lake District, the expansive scenery of Scotland and the volcanic landscapes of Iceland.

"Looking back at the years I spent living and working in Yemen, Oman, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, travelling all over the world, I often smile and think about how much I wish I had carried my modern camera gear with me during that chapter of my life.

The landscapes and moments I witnessed were unforgettable. Today, that feeling drives my patience in the field. When I am standing out in the mist or waiting through the golden hours with my Hasselblad, I know exactly how rare a fleeting moment of perfect light truly is - and I don’t take a single frame for granted." - Russell
